Get out of Town! Fantastic Family Daytrips

March 17, 2009

Nashville is full of fun things to do with preschoolers, but sometimes you just have to get away. Here are a few suggested attractions that aren't exactly local but will still allow you to end the day in your own bed.

1. Tennessee Aquarium -- Whether your kid is into sharks or seahorses, the Tennessee Aquarium won't disappoint. Located in Chattanooga, the Tennessee Aquarium is home to just about any undersea creature your preschooler might want to see. Plus butterflies, penguins, and more.

2. US Space & Rocket Center -- Huntsville, Alabama's US Space and Rocket Center is the perfect daytrip for budding astronauts. Your preschooler will enjoy hands-on exhibits as well as space memorabilia of all shapes and sizes. Be sure to stop in the gift shop for some astronaut ice cream on your way out.

3. Kentucky Down Under -- Kentucky Down Under is a highly specialized zoo located in Horse Cave, Kentucky. The focus is on all things Australian. Since the Nashville Zoo is lacking Kangaroos and Wallabies, KDU probably has something your preschooler has never seen before.

4. Rock City -- If you've ignored the scores of "See Rock City" signs leading to this Chattanooga area attraction, maybe it's time to stop by. Your preschooler can wave hello to Grandma from the top of Lookout Mountain, from which seven states can be seen.

5. Mammoth Cave -- Mammoth cave measures over 350 miles long and 379 feet deep. You may not feel like trekking quite that far in with your preschooler, but you will want to watch her eyes shine with wonder at this underground marvel.

Now you know where I'd go if I had a free day -- where do you like to get away with your preschooler?
