Spring Has Sprung -- Now What?

April 28, 2009

Winter is definitely behind us here in Nashville. In fact, this weeks temperatures have been downright summery. Now that the days are longer and the weather is warmer, it's time to return to the places and activities that just don't work so well in wintertime. Here are five warm-weather activities your preschooler will be happy to return to.

1. Try some fresh produce

Now is the time to visit farmers' markets all over town for fresh produce. The one in Franklin opens this Saturday, May 2nd.

2. Stop and smell the flowers

The museum and gardens of Cheekwood are open all throughout the year, but the flowers are most beautiful through the spring and summer. Admission is free tomorrow, April 29th.

3. Eat a sweet treat

Warm days in Nashville are best punctuated with a frozen treat from Las Paletas. We enjoyed vanilla chocolate chip and chocolate chocolate chip at a birthday party recently.

4. Learn to swim

Get a head start on swimming lessons at area YMCAs with indoor pools -- your preschooler will be ready to splish and splash by the time the gates open at outdoor pools.

5. Just get outside and play

Blow bubbles. Ride a bike. Fly a kite. Plant a garden. Partake in your favorite outdoor activities right now before it gets too hot to enjoy them.

Weekend Preview 3.19.09

March 19, 2009

It's been a long, cold winter here in Nashville, but everywhere I look I see signs that it's over. The bradford pears are in bloom, as are the daffodils. We've had a few of what my daughter lovingly refers to as "short sleeve days" this week. And tomorrow is officially the first day of spring. To celebrate the season's arrival, Cheekwood is offering free admission this weekend, March 21st and 22nd. The weather should be nice, and you can't beat the price.
