Weekend Preview 3.26.09

March 26, 2009

There's another fantastic freebie this weekend. Sunday, March 29th, is a Free Family Day at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. This particular free day has a medieval twist. The exhibit Medieval Treasures from the Cleveland Museum of Art opened last month, so the day will be peppered with various medieval themed activities. There will be music, dance, and even medieval stage combat lessons from Nashville Children's Theatre. Opportunities for creating visual art will also abound during this special day. Best of all, it's all free.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts is open from 1:00 PM until 5:30 PM this Sunday. Have fun, and maybe I'll see you there!

Outdoor Art in Nashville

March 24, 2009

Art is everywhere in Nashville. Now that spring is here, it's a great time to enjoy art that isn't constrained by buildings and walls. Here are five great places to enjoy outdoor art here in Nashville.

1. Musica Statue, Music Row Roundabout

If you're afraid to let your child look at the human body, this one isn't for you. But I'm a firm believer that a child allowed to giggle at a naked statue as a preschooler will grow into an adult who can look at one without laughing. The figures in sculptor Alan LeQuire's Musica celebrate music and the arts in a larger-than-life way that even the youngest preschooler can appreciate.

2. Athena, The Parthenon, Centennial Park

Athena is housed under the roof of the Parthenon, but since she lives in the park we'll call her outdoor art. This 42 foot high woman, a replica of the goddess found in the original Parthenon, will wow your preschooler with her massive scale.

3. Ghost Ballet for the East Bank Machineworks, Cumberland River

Alice Aycock's massive sculpture, which Nashvillians seem to love or hate, will inspire preschoolers with it's bright red hue and dismantled roller coaster appearance.

4. Carell Woodland Sculpture Trail, Cheekwood

This beautiful mile-long path is adorned with a variety of sculptures from diverse international artists. Take the time to walk through and discuss what the many sculptures look like and how they make your preschooler feel. You'll feel proud when you hear her thoughtful remarks.

5. Your place!

Whether the artist works in finger paints or sidewalk chalk, your house can be the greatest studio / gallery your child could hope for. Encourage her to express herself artistically and don't be afraid to let things get a little messy. You are outside, after all.
